Currumbin named after this tree

Currumbin Name Origin

by
Currumbin – Is the Aboriginal name for a species of pine tree, but it was not the name by which the creek was shown on the maps drawn by surveyor Dixon in 1839. He called it Anson Creek after Admiral George Anson who after serving as private secretary to Lord Melbourne, the Whig Prime Minister of England, became the private secretary to Albert, the husband of the young Queen Victoria. Albert wanted to bring a German retinue with him, but the leaders of the English parliament would not hear of it. Anson was appointed to ensure that an English viewpoint […]

Community Observations

by Kitty Jellinek
Yesterday after shopping in our local supermarket, I was in the queue at the Check Out, and heard when the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment. The woman apologised to the young girl & then sighed, “We didn’t have this ‘green thing’ back in my earlier days.” The young clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. You folk didn’t do enough to save our environment for future generations.” The older lady said “Ahh yes you’re right — our generation didn’t have the […]

Who Cares About The Australian Budget?

by Kitty Jellinek
How Fast Can You Register an ABN? Wednesday, 13th May 2015 – London, United Kingdom By Sam Volkering • How fast can you register an ABN? • The key to everything In today’s Money Morning…the most boring 30 minutes since the last budget announcement…buying votes wherever they can…why bond markets are the key to everything…and more… It’s fair to say I haven’t had the most exciting morning. I don’t classify 30 minutes listening to Joe Hockey as all that exciting. In fact, I’d ask for it back if I could. Nonetheless, it’s important for me in my role as your […]

Currumbin Surf Beach

by
The great surf beach at Currumbin is lifesaver protected and an all time favorite of the locals. The estuary of Currumbin creek pours out at the Currumbin Rock seen in the distance in the photo above. A short walk inland from the rock brings you to the Currumbin lake favored by those who prefer to swim in still water. Street cafes with great ocean views abound on the roadside adjacent to the beach. On the beach a little South from Currumbin Rock, Elephant Rock rises out of the water. The Elephant Rock Cafe is a super place to take it […]

Birds in Currumbin

by
Our backyard is home to many of these wonderful birds found in abundance on the Gold Coast in Southeast Queensland, Australia. I awake to hear the warbling, chirping, whistling and delightful songs of a great variety of birds every morning. It is usually the Kookaburras that herald the day each dawn with their UUU hah hah hah ku ku ku laughter. Followed by the beautiful song of the Currawong, the occasional screech of a white cockatoo and the incessant chatter of the Lorikeets [Photo: Lorikeet on gum flowers – by Ian Walker]. The pink Galas look on in haughty silence, as […]
